The Red Passion Story

The Red Passion was first produced in May 1998 and has been slowly improved upon through careful selection and breeding
.This fantastic new variety was introduced to the Discus Community at the 2000 Duisburg show and all the fishes that were displayed were sold. That was a remarkable achievement considering that the market was flooded with all kind of solid red discus.
What sets the Red passion apart from the lesser varieties is the unique red colouration which is clean, refreshing and has a warm radiant glow.
How the Red Passion came about
On 3rd May 1998, a male Golden Discus paired up with a female Red Brown Discus and they finally spawned after several weeks of waiting. At a room temperature of 28 Celsius and a pH of 6.5, about 120 eggs were laid. Unfortunately, due to the weak fertilizing capability of the male Golden Discus, only 24 fry hatched successfully.
I observed that when they were about 3 inches, there were 2 kinds of Discus. One was the
Golden Discus and the other had a unique bright red colouration on a golden base. Unfortunately, the latter had orange eyes. A decision needed to be made. It was either to improve the colour of the eyes or to stablise the genetic makeup. Due to the fact that fish with absent striations were considered to have weaker genes during that time, I made the decision to stablise the genes before improving the colour of the eyes.
A pair of the discus with the unique bright red coloration on a golden base was selected for inbreeding and subsequently in the following year, the F1 was crossed with a red-eyed Red Brown Discus. A year later, this new variation made its mark at the prestigious Aquarama 2001 competition, winning the coveted 2nd prize in the Solid Red/Brown Form category.
This strain was named ‘Red Passion' – to reflect my relentless effort in the selective breeding of bright red discus and the constant striving for a colour that would stand out among the rest. This is a truly made-in-Singapore discus which has attracted attention from all parts of the world.
